Oxford Lions host Community meeting

Members of the Oxford Lions club welcomed area Lions Clubs to an open house on February 3rd. Lions from Auburn, Charlton, Dudley, Grafton, Leicester, Mendon, Northborough and Upton attended the event held at the Pine Ridge Country club in North Oxford. Guest speaker for the event was Richard Ferrucci the President of Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Foundation (MLERF). His organization provides grant funding to Massachusetts institutions who are performing research related to the prevention and cure of eye-related diseases.

Albert Dubois, Oxford Lions President said the purpose of the meeting was gather area Lions clubs together to share ideas and experiences. Dubois noted that given the large amount of people present at the meeting that it was a huge success.

Richard Ferrucci from MLERF noted that for over a half century his organization has had a tremendous impact on thousands of lives. Each year, research funded by MLERF touches many lives, saving and restoring the sight of people of all ages and all walks of life. This is only possible through the generosity and support of local Lions clubs such as the ones gathered at this meeting.

The meeting also featured presentations by Lions 33A Vice District Governors Susan Dunphy and EJ Sowden. Both Vice District Governors stressed the importance of community service and asked their fellow Lions to find their passion and follow the Lions motto “We Serve”. Lionism is not only about helping those with sight issues, it is identifying a need and providing that service to your community said VDG Dunphy. She said Lions throughout the district are involved in local projects, that support medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer treatment. Local Lion members also contribute both time and money to local food banks as well as youth and elderly programs.
