Quinebaug Valley Singers Concert

Sunday, January 12, 2014 - 4:00pm

Sacred Heart Church, 18 E. Main St, Webster, MA.

The 50 member chorus from north-east Connecticut and south-central Massachusetts is led by Music Director Nym Cooke of New Braintree, MA.

The centerpiece of these concerts will be the Story of the Birth of Jesus Christ (ca.1660)

by early Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz.  Schütz, who composed this piece while he was court composer to the Elector of Saxony in Dresden, Germany, was a master musician, the most important German composer before J.S. Bach.

His Historis der Geburt Jesu Christi tells the marvelous Christmas story we all know so well, narrated throughout by an “Evangelist” (here sung by four different QVS tenors), and with choruses and arias for angels, shepherds, Wise Men, King Herod and four high priests.  It is a deeply devotional, deeply Christmas piece performed by QVS in English translation, with organ accompaniment by Brooks Milgate.

In keeping with the Schütz piece, the second portion of the concert will be German music for Christmas, featuring audience favorites, several sing-a-longs and guitar accompaniment to an original version of “Silent Night”. These concerts will take QVS audiences back to a Christmas much closer to the original magic of the great mid-winter Christian festival celebrating Christ's birth.

Admission is free, though a freewill offering we be collected.  Refreshments served.
